Masters Golf PGA Tournament Travel Guide

Teeing Up a Trip to The Masters: Travel Tips and Why Insurance Matters

If you're a golf fan, attending The Masters at Augusta National is probably sitting high on your bucket list. There’s something magical about those azaleas, Amen Corner, and the pure prestige of it all. But scoring tickets and getting there takes planning, and that's where we come in with some insider tips (and a gentle reminder about travel insurance).

First things first: how do you get tickets?

The Masters is famously exclusive, but it's not impossible. The tournament uses a ticket lottery system, which opens on their official website each year—typically in June—for the following year's tournament. So, mark your calendar and cross your fingers! If you miss the lottery, verified ticket resale platforms are your next best bet, but be prepared to pay a premium.

When’s the best time to go?

The tournament runs from Monday to Sunday, with practice rounds earlier in the week (Monday–Wednesday) and competitive play Thursday–Sunday. If you want a more laid-back experience, the practice rounds are amazing—you can bring a camera (only during these days!), see the players up close, and even catch the iconic Par 3 Contest on Wednesday. For die-hard fans, championship Sunday is the dream, but it’s also the priciest and most crowded.

Getting there

Augusta, Georgia, is relatively small, so many attendees fly into larger hubs like Atlanta or Charlotte and drive in. Flights and hotels book up fast, so plan early. And keep in mind that Southern springtime weather can be unpredictable. Sunshine one minute, thunderstorms the next so plan your outfits accordingly!

And here's where travel insurance swings into play.

With high ticket prices, non-refundable lodging, and the potential for travel delays or weather-related cancellations, having travel insurance can save you from major headaches (and wallet pain). Look for coverage that includes trip cancellation, travel delays, and even weather disruptions. If you're investing in a once-in-a-lifetime sports experience, it's worth protecting it.

Bonus tips:

  • Cell phones aren’t allowed on the grounds, so plan your meet-up spots ahead of time.
  • Food is famously affordable—$1.50 pimento cheese sandwiches, anyone?
  • Dress for the occasion and wear comfortable golf attire, conservative casualwear is the way to go.
  • The merchandise shop is legendary. For all available merchandise, you must go to the pro shop. Go early for the best selection (and yes, they ship).

The Masters PGA Tournament is always on par for an unforgettable golf getaway. So, if you’re dreaming of that green-jacket glory from the gallery, plan smart, pack your polos, and don’t forget the insurance. After all, even the best laid travel plans can land in a bunker.
