Visiting France: Travel Requirements

For U.S. and EU citizens, you are generally visa-exempt for short stays up to 90 days in France under the Schengen Area agreement. A valid passport is required—issued within the past 10 years, with at least three months’ validity beyond your planned departure. Starting in 2026, visa-exempt travelers will also need to apply for ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System)—a pre-travel authorization valid for three years that allows multiple entries within the 90-day limit in any 180-day period. ETIAS is not a visa, but it will be mandatory for entry.

Travelers from countries not eligible for visa-free entry must apply for a Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) before traveling. This visa generally permits visits of up to 90 days within a 180-day period and requires documentation such as proof of accommodation, financial means, return or onward travel, and the purpose of the visit. For stays longer than 90 days, travelers must obtain a long-stay national visa (Type D) through France’s official France-Visas portal before departure.

Travel Insurance Is Responsible Travel Planning

Travel insurance is an essential part of responsible travel planning. Whether it's mandatory or not, having adequate coverage can protect you from financial and logistical challenges that may arise during your trip. Always research your destination's requirements and consider purchasing a comprehensive policy that meets your specific needs.

Travel insurance is strongly recommended, not required

While France does not require proof of travel insurance for entry, it is strongly recommended, especially for non-EU visitors. Medical care in France is high quality but can be expensive for those without European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) coverage.

Comprehensive Travel Insurance Plans include both travel medical and trip cancellation coverage, along with many other essential coverages for travel.

Travel medical plans are available for US Citizens/US Residents, while traveling to other countries and for foreign nationals who are visiting other countries but NOT traveling to the USA. Travel medical plans provide coverage for an accident and sickness while traveling. These plans do not include coverage for trip cancellation.
