Visiting the UK: Travel Requirements

For U.S., EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein citizens visiting the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland), you must hold a valid passport for the duration of your stay, ensuring it is less than 10 years old and has sufficient blank pages. Most travelers will also need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before departure. The ETA, valid for two years or until your passport expires, allows multiple visits of up to six months each and costs £16. Applications are completed online or via the official UK ETA app, with decisions typically made within three working days. ETA requirements apply even for short transits through the UK, and each traveler—including children—must have their own. Certain categories, such as British or Irish citizens and those with a valid UK visa, are exempt.

Nationals from countries not eligible for visa-free entry to the UK must apply for a Standard Visitor Visa before traveling. This visa generally allows stays of up to six months and requires proof of sufficient funds, accommodation details, and a return or onward ticket.

Internationals may also need a visa if they’re planning to stay in the UK - for example, to work or study.

Travel Insurance Is Responsible Travel Planning

Travel insurance is an essential part of responsible travel planning. Whether it's mandatory or not, having adequate coverage can protect you from financial and logistical challenges that may arise during your trip. Always research your destination's requirements and consider purchasing a comprehensive policy that meets your specific needs.

Travel insurance is strongly recommended, not required

The U.K. does not require visitors to have travel insurance for entry, but it is highly recommended. Non-residents are generally not eligible for free treatment through the U.K.’s National Health Service (NHS), and medical care can be costly without coverage.

Comprehensive Travel Insurance Plans include both travel medical and trip cancellation coverage, along with many other essential coverages for travel.

Travel medical plans are available for US Citizens/US Residents, while traveling to other countries and for foreign nationals who are visiting other countries but NOT traveling to the USA. Travel medical plans provide coverage for an accident and sickness while traveling. These plans do not include coverage for trip cancellation.
