Disney Cruise Line Adds New Desitnations

Disney Cruise Line announced a new island destination coming in the Summer of 2024: Lighthouse Point, on the island of Eleuthera in The Bahamas.

The island, billed as an "eco-friendly destination, which is being designed with input from local artists and advisors," will welcome families for the first time in June 2024, with bookings open to the public as of March 30.

The cruise line will also return to "premier European destinations in the Mediterranean, Greek Isles, British Isles and popular locales in the Norwegian Fjords and Iceland" aboard the Disney Dream in Summer of 2024. New ports of call will include Valencia, Spain; Haugesund, Norway; and Hamburg, Germany, along with three Mediterranean destinations that will return for the first time since 2014: Catania, Italy; Kusadasi, Turkey; and Valletta, Malta.

The cruise line also announced a Southeast Asia cruise coming in 2025. Singapore will be the exclusive homeport for a brand-new Disney cruise ship for at least five years beginning in 2025. No additional details are available quite yet.

London Heathrow Airport Strikes
Will London's Heathrow Airport Strikes Affect Your Travel?

If London's Heathrow Airport (LHR) is part of your May travel itinerary, make sure you know how the upcoming strikes may affect your flight.

1,400 airport security staff at Heathrow Airport are set to strike for eight days in a dispute over pay: May 4-6, 9-10, and 25-27.

The security officers, who are members of Unite, the UK’s leading union, also took ten days of strike action over Easter, which caused considerable disruption at the airport and resulted in hundreds of flights being canceled.

Unite said the strike next month would cause “inevitable disruption and delays” when people are expected to travel to the UK for King Charles’s coronation.

For its part, Heathrow Airport has said that it will deploy 1,000 additional staff to minimize disruption. Still, passengers are advised to check in early for any flights on these days.

If your flight gets canceled, airlines are typically obliged to help you with another flight or compensation. Make sure you know your airline's policies.

It is worth noting that since these strikes are known events, a travel insurance plan with Cancel for Any Reason or Interruption for Any Reason, like Safe Travels Voyager, is your best bet for trip protection. A standard travel insurance plan without these optional benefits will likely not cover you if you have to cancel your trip or are delayed or interrupted due to the strikes.

Montego Bay, Jamaica
Jamaica's Big Comeback

Jamaica experienced its biggest and best winter tourism season in history this year and the island is on track for a continued travel industry boom for the foreseeable future.

Between January and March of 2023, Jamaica recorded 1.18 million visitors, Jamaica’s minister of tourism Edmund Bartlett said recently while opening Jamaica’s Sectoral Debate in parliament. The visitor levels for early 2023 represent a growth of 94.4 percent over the same period in 2022.

While this is good news for Jamaica's economy, a shortage of airport staff to process the unexpected volume caused long queues and hours-long waits for arriving passengers at the island’s main airport, Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay (MBJ).

Bartlett told The Associated Press that "authorities plan to spend more on technology as they strive to do away with paperwork at the airport, including ending a requirement for visitors to fill out a form upon arrival."

Prime Minister Andrew Holness said the problems underscore the need to push through a $70 million modernization and expansion project scheduled to be completed by 2025. The initiative will enable MBJ to accommodate mega airlines, making it easier than ever to travel to Jamaica.

Jamaica was named the Caribbean’s Leading Destination 2022 for the 16th straight year at last year’s World Travel Awards. Jamaica also was awarded Caribbean’s Leading Cruise Destination 2022, Caribbean’s Leading Tourist Board 2022 for the 14th year in a row, and Caribbean’s Leading Nature Destination 2022.
