FAA Staffing Shortages Threaten to Disrupt U.S. Air Travel This Summer

Travelers flying through Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) are facing mounting delays and cancellations as a combination of FAA staffing shortages, runway construction, and bad weather severely hampers operations. More than 20% of the airport’s air traffic controllers have reportedly walked off the job, and with only one runway currently operational due to construction, the airport is struggling to handle its usual flight volume. Thunderstorms and recent air traffic control outages have only added to the disruption.

This local crisis reflects a broader national issue. The FAA remains short thousands of certified air traffic controllers, a gap dating back to pandemic-era training delays. Heavily trafficked airspaces like New York and Florida are among the most impacted, prompting some airlines to scale back. United Airlines, which operates a major hub at Newark, announced on May 2 that it would cancel 35 daily round-trip flights, about 10% of its Newark schedule, citing no short-term solution in sight.

Tensions are rising, with federal safety officials and union leaders warning that the situation could compromise passenger safety. In an alarming statement to NBC’s Tom Costello, one air safety employee urged travelers to avoid Newark altogether. Meanwhile, the Association of Flight Attendants has called on all airlines to reduce schedules proportionally, emphasizing the need to prioritize safety and prevent further disruption.

If you have plans to fly in or out of EWR, check for flight alerts regularly and consider rerouting through JFK, LaGuardia, or Philadelphia to avoid potential delays. Booking morning flights, leaving buffer time in your itinerary, and securing travel insurance that covers delays, cancellations, and missed connections is more important than ever. REAL ID
REAL ID Deadline Set for May 7, 2025—Are You Ready?

After years of delays, the REAL ID requirement will officially take effect on May 7, 2025. Beginning that day, all U.S. travelers over the age of 18 must present a REAL ID-compliant license or an acceptable alternative—such as a passport—to pass through airport security for domestic flights. The rule stems from the 2005 REAL ID Act, which set federal security standards for state-issued IDs. Despite widespread outreach, many Americans still haven’t updated their licenses, and DMVs across the country are facing appointment backlogs as the deadline approaches.

A REAL ID is typically marked with a gold or black star in the top corner of a state-issued driver's license or ID card. Some travelers may already have a state-issued Enhanced ID, which also meets the requirement—even without the star—if it displays the word “enhanced” and a U.S. flag. These IDs are only available in five states but are also valid for land and sea border crossings into Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean. For those without a REAL or Enhanced ID, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) accepts several alternatives, including a valid U.S. passport, passport card, military ID, DHS trusted traveler cards, and more.

While the REAL ID is only required for domestic air travel, passports remain necessary for international travel—and now may serve double duty as a fallback ID if your state license isn’t compliant. Officials recommend checking your current ID now. If you’re unsure whether it qualifies, visit your state’s DMV website or the TSA’s REAL ID page to confirm. States are urging residents to act quickly to avoid last-minute surprises at the airport.

If your ID doesn’t have a star and you're unable to secure a REAL ID before your flight, make sure your passport is valid and readily available as backup identification. And with tighter airport security ahead, don’t leave home without travel insurance from Trawick International—it’s an extra layer of protection if travel delays or ID issues disrupt your plans.

Air Travel Update
Air Travel Update: Premium Seats, New Routes, and Futuristic Jets Take Flight

Despite some economic caution prompting a few airlines to trim schedules, many carriers are forging ahead with exciting new innovations. From premium cabin upgrades and upscale airport lounges to the unveiling of futuristic aircraft and expanded route networks, travelers can look forward to a more comfortable and connected experience in the skies.

Several international carriers rolled out upgraded cabin designs this month. Etihad Airways introduced stunning new first-class suites for its upcoming Airbus A321LR aircraft, set to take flight in August, alongside redesigned business and economy cabins. All Nippon Airways (ANA) also revealed revamped premium economy and economy seats debuting on its Boeing 787-9 fleet starting in 2026, promising more space and comfort for long-haul travelers. Meanwhile, Airbus wowed the industry with a new concept for an ultra-premium first-class suite aboard the A350-1000, featuring a double-wide bed and in-flight dining for two.

United Airlines grabbed headlines with two major investments into the future of air travel. The carrier announced a partnership with electric air taxi company Archer, aiming to launch a high-speed shuttle service between Manhattan and surrounding airports. It also backed JetZero, a startup developing fuel-efficient blended wing body aircraft—with an option to purchase up to 100 of these futuristic jets down the line. On the ground, U.S. airlines focused on passenger comfort too: Delta opened a new SkyClub in Atlanta, United expanded its Polaris Lounge in Chicago, and American Airlines previewed its upcoming Flagship Lounge in Philadelphia featuring a menu by local chef Randy Rucker.

Travelers will also have more route options in the months ahead. Alaska Airlines added new nonstops from San Diego, JetBlue expanded out of Fort Lauderdale, and Spirit announced service to Savannah, Georgia. On the international front, EVA Air will soon offer a Taipei-to-Dallas flight, and Fiji Airways launched service to Cairns, Australia—making trips to the Great Barrier Reef easier than ever.

With the summer travel season heating up, these developments promise smoother and more exciting journeys for travelers worldwide. Whether you’re jetting off to explore a new destination or enjoying the comforts of an upgraded flight experience, now is the perfect time to plan your next adventure—and protect it. Don’t forget to pack peace of mind with travel insurance from Trawick International, so you’re covered no matter where the journey takes you.

 Marbella Top Destination
Marbella Emerges as 2025’s Top Summer Escape Amid Declining U.S. Tourism

As international travelers rethink their summer plans, Spain—and particularly the coastal gem of Marbella—is stealing the spotlight from longtime American favorites like California. Rising travel costs, political polarization, and long-haul fatigue are driving tourists away from the U.S., and destinations like Marbella are answering the call with sunshine, sophistication, and unmatched convenience. With affordable European flights and no visa hurdles, Spain’s Costa del Sol is quickly becoming the smarter summer choice for 2025.

Recent data from the U.S. International Trade Administration shows a troubling trend: international interest in visiting the U.S. is waning. British traveler numbers dropped by 14% last month, while German and Luxembourg arrivals declined by 29% and 43%, respectively. Instead, European travelers are turning to nearby destinations like Marbella, which boasts 320 days of sunshine a year, Mediterranean beaches, vibrant festivals, and a luxurious lifestyle—at a fraction of the hassle and cost of visiting the U.S.

Marbella is more than just scenic coastlines. Its blend of outdoor adventure, high-end shopping, and rich cultural heritage rivals that of Southern California, minus the rising airfare, political tension, and visa complications. In fact, budget flights from London to Malaga start at just £84, and the city is a mere 40-minute drive from the airport. The Mediterranean climate, gourmet dining, and upscale neighborhoods like Sierra Blanca are drawing travelers who once flocked to Beverly Hills or Santa Monica.

For those seeking a safe, sun-filled summer escape without the stress, Spain delivers in every way. Marbella offers the best of both worlds: European charm and world-class luxury, all within easy reach. If your 2025 travel plans include sunshine and serenity, consider heading to the Costa del Sol—and don’t forget to protect your perfect getaway with travel insurance from Trawick International.
